Alice slid over so the family could pass them. She smiled perfunctorily. Once the family had moved to the far end of the row, she turned to Ben.

“As soon as that man regains consciousness, he’s going to tell them about you.”

Ben nodded. “I don’t think he saw you. I’m hoping your disguise still works.”

Alice drew in a long breath. “Okay, what do we do after the game?”

She had no idea what to do in the city with so little cash, no one she could reach out to, and no credit card or bank resources. They couldn’t stay outside. It was going to be cold tonight. She’d seen warnings on the TV screens they’d passed. The city had issued an extreme cold weather alert and were opening more resources for those living on the streets. Maybe they could ask a homeless person for tips about where to go?

Ben scanned their area and then looked down at the basketball court. The building was filling up. The game would be starting soon.

“I’ve been thinking on this. We can’t go to a normal hotel, motel or anyplace that will want to see our ID or a credit card. I know some places that take cash, but we don’t have a lot, and some of the people in those places might catch on that I’m a cop. They are also likely to be susceptible to pressure from the gang that’s after you.”

Alice swallowed. She’d considered this, as well.

“I don’t have relatives in the city, and my friends are cops or cop-adjacent,” he explained.

“They wouldn’t trust you? Believe your story?” she asked. She had only known Ben a day, but she trusted him absolutely. Did he not have friends who would feel the same way?

Ben made another scan of their section. “I want to say yes. There are men I’m tight with. But...”

Alice struggled to understand for a moment. “You don’t want to implicate them?”

“I’m convinced there’s a mole. Someone trusted who’s turned. Their best play is to convince everyone that the mole is me.”

Alice could feel her mouth drop open. Ben, the mole? That made no sense.

“But you aren’t. You can’t be. It’s only because of you that I’m not already with those men.”

Ben nodded. “But because of me the police don’t know where you are. I’ve isolated you. For all they know, the gang does have you.”

“But they don’t.” Alice was ready to spit in aggravation. “I can tell them...” She trailed off. She couldn’t tell them anything, not now. Not until the trial was over or the mole was neutralized.

Ben put a hand on hers. “I know it’ll all come out right in the wash. When it’s all over, everyone will know I was doing the right thing. And most importantly, you’ll be safe. But—”

“But?” She needed to know. She had more at stake here than anyone.

“I’d be putting anyone I called in a tight place. And I don’t know what the mole’s been disseminating while we’ve been out of touch.”

Alice drew in another long breath.
